Dr. Fauci's in a heap o' trouble. I don't know the basis, I don't know the facts, and I sure don't know what will be the outcome.
It reminds me, most of all, of the unmitigated, baseless hatred MAGA directed toward the rest of us throughout the COVID era.
COVID first appeared in China in December 2019. Whether it came from a lab leak or instead a wet market — a place where live animals are sold for you to kill and cook at home, the animals in this case most notably including bats — is a matter of debate. Either way, it soon spread all over the world, brought by, of all things, tourists.
The virus has the diabolical trait, of a latency or incubation period of fourteen days. Once you're infected, you're fully contagious, but symptom-free, for two weeks. Only then do you get sick. In the meantime, you've exposed everyone you've had contact with.
You can imagine what this means, when two or three infected people, who nonetheless feel fine, are cooped up with several hundred other people on a twelve-hour plane flight.
As of February 26, 2020, there were 85,000 identified cases around the world, and it was only beginning to show up in the U.S. In an act of unspeakable evil, Rush Limbaugh declared that the whole thing was a hoax intended to make President Trump look bad. How a worldwide plague could be a hoax meant to smear one man, is beyond me. But that's what Limbaugh said, and Trump believed him.
We were watching the TV news at the homeless shelter on March 17, 2020, when the segment came on of French President Emmanuel Macron addressing his nation about the pandemic on live TV. He began, “Nous sommes en guerre.” — “We are at war.” If President Trump had adopted that same posture, everything that followed would have been different. Instead, he vacillated back and forth throughout 2020, between seeming to take the epidemic seriously and, frankly, seeming to care far more about the stock market. In October of that year, he was claiming that media attention to the crisis constitutued election interference, and was treasonous.
Nonetheless, he took every vaccine as soon as it became availalble, and to this day, regards Operation Warp Speed, the effort to expedite vaccine development, as the greatest achievement of his first term.
Fauci's fate was sealed on March 20 when, on national TV, he did a facepalm in response to a joke Trump made about the "deep state." This was construed as disrespectful to the President and, as MAGA saw things, Fauci became Public Enemy No. 1.
There were closures of businesses and schools. We were told to wear masks outside, avoid standing any closer than six feet from another person, and told to avoid large groups and gatherings. There was a lot of resentment against these restrictions. It always amazed me that people seemed to think this only affected the United States. There were riots in Europe against similar restrictions there.
To me, it all seemed very simple, and not hard: Just do the necessary to protect my own health and the health of those around me. MAGA didn't see it that way.
To this day, I have Friends who insist that the whole thing was brought on by the Cabal, a small group of powerful men who control everything that happens in the world, including earthquakes and hurricanes. These Friends insist that the Cabal did this merely because it wants to control people. I insist that there must have been some additional, other goal, if that is so.
MAGA referred to us as "sheeple," people who would blindly follow any instruction they were given. They portrayed us as sheep wearing masks. In contrast, they portrayed themselves as the courageous lions, not wearing masks.
In some cases, courageous equals stupid. Throughout the COVID era, death rates were higher in red counties than in blue counties.
Now the move is on to make one man, one man, the culprit or villain for these millions of deaths worldwide, and to make him the focus of all the hatred that used to be directed toward the rest of us.
It's all so unnecessary.
