Changing what I want
Tuesday, November 8, 2016 Last week I was turned away from the shelter three times: Sunday night, Wednesday night and Thursday night. Under current conditions, to be sure I get a bunk, I must show up no later than 14:15. It’s not just a matter of being on time, but of getting near the front of the line. And that’s iffy in itself, given that there’s always a bum rush when the gate opens at 14:30. Accordingly, I must wrap up my activities at church at 13:30 and leave out no

Choosing what to want isn’t a no-brainer, either.
At least, not for people like me.

Choosing to feel good is not a no-brainer
A few days ago, in the “smoke pit” awaiting entry to the homeless shelter where I stay, I sat facing a choice of whether to feel good or feel bad. I allowed myself to stay in that state for some time so as to examine it. As I’ve observed many times in the past, it proved to be, apparently, a completely arbitrary choice. This really puzzled, and puzzles me. Choosing to feel good creates light. Choosing to feel bad creates darkness. There is so much “darkness” in the world

The great questions of our time
In recent weeks it has been a matter of some chagrin to me that my Yahoo! News feed keeps bringing articles from major outlets that prove in my estimation to have far less merit than my own; while my own work continues to be ignored.

o Here – Now – Can
Here is the third chapter of The Way of Peace. The first two chapters appeared Friday and yesterday. APPLICATION We are considering the human being as having, so to speak, three intimately interconnected “bodies:” (a) a material, physical body of flesh, that engages in behavior and acts on other material objects; (b) a body that thinks, is composed of and acts on ideas (ideation), which we may call the “mind;” and (c) a body of emotions, or feelings or “affects” (all the sam

About silence
Here is the second portion of the book The Way of Peace, the first portion of which appeared yesterday. ———— ♦ ———— MEDITATION Meditation is not the whole of the Way, any more than flour is the whole of cookies. If you want cookies, you must also have butter, sugar, and perhaps eggs, in addition to flour. Flour is essential, however. Likewise as to the Way, meditation is so essential, as to move me to say this: if you have any interest in learning the Way, and do not now have

The Way of Peace
In 2010, I set out to write a little book that would set forth exactly what I believe Jesus really taught. I entitled it The Way of Peace. Here is the first section of that text, entitled “ABOUT THIS BOOK.” ———— ♦ ———— Matthew 11:28-30: Jesus said, Come to me, all ye who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; … and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. All my life, I have been co

The path of presence
Thursday, May 1, 2014. For several days, I’ve sought a sign as to whether presence is, indeed, the way to go. No answer could be clearer than my experience this afternoon.

Practical advantages of being a nice guy
It’s been a long time since I last considered this; maybe because, for some months, there haven’t been that many jerks among us at the shelter. Whether the “spirit” I breathe out has anything to do with that, I don’t know.[1] But I was in the shower 07/01/12 and overheard that they’d run out of wash cloths, and that brought this to mind.
Just being a nice guy earns me concrete, practical rewards.

Me, me, me.
(Originally published 06/06/13 at Trojan Horse Productions.) This has been a very heavy day, and there’s a lot here. For the moment, at least, I will not try to organize this. Darkness at times appears to serve Light; destruction, to serve creation. It is a rude awakening for me to have to revisit the world of infantile self-centeredness, apparently to have to re-learn correctly this time (at age 57!) some things I didn’t learn correctly on the first go-round. A world where i
